About Museum of Appalachia

John Rice Irwin spent a lifetime collecting the everyday objects of Southern Appalachia, and the result is a Smithsonian-affiliated farm village of cabins, barns, churches and a schoolhouse with sheep and peacocks wandering between them. Three display buildings hold folk art, homemade instruments, baskets and quilts, each with the story of who made it. A restaurant serves Appalachian cooking and the gift shop carries regional craft.
